SoCal ROC Recognizes "Shining Star" Recipients
On Thursday, April 28th, the Southern California Regional Occupational Center, also known as SoCal ROC, held its annual scholarship award dinner at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Redondo Beach. Thirty-eight high school and adult students received scholarships for the purpose of assisting students in continuing their education to achieve their career goals. Over $35,000 was awarded to students. The event was fully supported and funded by donors and sponsors of SoCal ROC and event ticket sales
In addition to student scholarships awarded, individuals are also recognized for their unique and outstanding career accomplishments as a result of their affiliation with SoCal ROC. This year, local state legislators were recognized for their support and on-going efforts to identify an on-going funding source for SoCal ROC. As of June 30, 2015, the state eliminated funding for Career Technical Education Centers such as SoCal ROC. This after 49 years of providing valuable and quality career training to hundreds of thousands of high school students and adults throughout the South Bay.
Legislators recognized as "Shining Stars" were: Senator Ben Allen, 26th District; Senator Isadore Hall, III, 35th District; Assembly Member Autumn R. Burke, 62nd District, and Assembly Member David Hadley, 66th District. Each legislator pledged their continued support for making sure that SoCal ROC has adequate funding to continue to offer these much needed career preparation programs.
